Yesterday I took my little boy for a bite to eat at Cafe Mocha in Torquay's Union Street.
Occupying a prominent position opposite Costa, the cafe is spacious and light in comparison to its well-known neighbours.
We found a table easy enough, which had comfy chairs and there was a highchair available for me to help myself today. I ordered at the counter a brie and Cranberry Panini and a children's meal comprising egg sandwich, crisps and a drink and a latte for me.
The drinks on offer for me to choose to go with the children's meal where unfortunately only two flavours of Fruit Shoot. Anyone who knows me will know how much I disapprove of those god-awful drinks, so I politely declined to have a free drink. The waitress kindly offered me the option of a free bottle of water instead which I took and she offered me a straw to go with it to make it suitable for my little boy which I was impressed by. I do fail to understand why cafes offer such unhealthy drinks as Fruit Shoots with children's meals when there are healthier and safer alternatives they could provide.
My latte was brought to the table quickly and swiftly followed by our food.
The food was nice enough, although somewhat uninspiring.
The atmosphere in the cafe however was very nice and it appeared that some of the customers were regulars. The staff seem very happy and were very friendly. I cannot fault the service at all.
The baby change facilities are separate to the toilets and seemed very clean.
The decor is nice though lacks imagination and the restaurant seems very clean. We were lucky to find a table with normal height chairs because the lower level of the cafe is set out as all tub chairs and low tables apart from the table we went to, you have to go upstairs to get to the rest of the normal tables which isn't ideal if you have a pram, swapping the tables around in my opinion would make it more child friendly as a high chair would tower over the lower height tables.
All in all we enjoyed our visit to Cafe Mocha and were impressed by both the staff and cleanliness.
Nice Mum Stars *** 3 out of 5
Heathy children's drinks and a better table layout would have made it 5
