Hey lovely ladies.
Just had the urge to share this with you all as I know many of you are expecting at the moment.
So, a year ago today my second son Buzz, who was 4 days old at the time suffered a horrific brain injury from newborn jaundice.
We had been discharged from the hospital with a slightly yellow baby on day2, had 2 midwifes visit us at home and commenting on how jaundiced he was. But none of them tested his bilirubin levels. Everyone kept telling us it was nothing to worry about and sadly we knew no different.
We now know there is a very simple test that all the professionals we saw should have done. This would have resulted in Buzz receiving the treatment he needed before it was too late.
So on day 4, a year ago today, Buzz had stopped feeding and seemed distressed so we rushed him in to hospital. 8 hours after arriving there we were told he probably wouldn't make it through the night and if he did he would have severe brain damage. They started treatment at that point, they saved his life but sadly he has brain damage and life it now so tough for him - he has cerebral palsy, dystonia, awful reflux, epilepsy, an unsafe swallow so has to be tube fed and isn't expected to make it to adulthood.
Absolutely not looking for sympathy please, Buzz is the most awesome hero around, literally we feel sooooo ridiculously blessed to have him- he's just amazing in every single way!
Just felt like warning you lovely mummies in my favourite FB group on the anniversary of Buzz's brain injury- newborn jaundice can cause brain damage and even kill. Please make sure if your baby is at all yellow you get their levels tested. And if you have any concerns at all about your baby, make sure they listen to you, Mum knows best.
